The target audience was the PG Life Science students. There were two guest speakers for the day: Dr. Awanti Sambarey, Research Scientist, University of Michigan, USA and Dr. Rakshambikai R, Senior Manager at IKP knowledge Park and BIRAC regional innovation centre, Bangalore.
Dr. Awanti talked about the advanced technologies that have enabled biologists to study the whole genomes, transcriptomes and proteomes of biological systems. The data generated by these high-throughput technologies could be integrated using systems biology approaches to enable the detection of putative biomarkers for improved diagnosis and reveal putative drug targets. She stressed the importance of collaboration of clinicians and basic scientists in order to effectively use systems biology approaches to understand infectious diseases.
Dr. Rakshambikai talked about the current work she is doing in the area of mapping regional innovation ecosystems, policy recommendations for entrepreneurship development, and managing start-up grants in the areas of Healthcare, Biopharma and Nutrition. She talked about the importance of doing a PhD and that the skill sets developed during PhD are very important for a smooth transition into industry. She asked the students to look for opportunities not only in the pharma industry but also in the fields of Nutrition and Agriculture as those are the problems currently faced in India.
The students were excited with both the lectures and gained knowledge of both advanced research topics such as systems biology and how to plan for a career in the industry.
