The event was sponsored by Merck-Sigma Aldrich Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. The theme for this year’s Chemposium was ‘Chemistry for Mankind’ and the topics for talk ranged from Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Design, Polymer Chemistry to Green and Environmental Chemistry which were not only contemporary but also touched upon social commitments of the chemistry community.
160 post graduate students, research scholars and faculty from various colleges, Research institutes, University and companies of Bangalore and IADC-A, participated in the event.
The Lecture workshop was inaugurated by the Dr. Jerome Xavier, Principal, IADC-A. He stressed the importance of pursuing research by the faculties occupying the space in Higher Education and materialistic gain should not be a hindrance to follow the passion of plunging into research in science.
Dr. Pintoo Ganguly, Site Head of Merck Bangalore graced the occasion as chief guest and delivered the keynote address. He conveyed his appreciation for conducting events like ‘Chemposium’ as it provides a forum for students, teachers and scholars to interact and share the latest developments in Chemistry.
Subsequent talk was by Dr. K.R. Prabhu, Department of Chemistry IISc Bangalore. He highlighted the importance of Green Chemistry in the present day research. Although the revolution in science has brought a great deal of advancement in synthetic chemistry, particularly in the field of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, polymers and several other day-to-day life, it has also brought quite a bit of problem. Most of the wastes generated in bulk chemical productions, fertilizers and so on creating problems and their disposal is a major problem. In the light of these issues, development of green chemistry is of paramount importance which would certainly reduce the problems related to pollution and chemical waste generation.
This was followed by a talk by Dr. Debasis Chakraborti, Deputy General Manager Lab operations from Merck–Sigma Aldrich Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore. He gave a glimpse of the company’s contribution in the global scenario with particular reference to India. He spoke on ‘Chemystery’ which emphasized the part played by Merck in solving the toughest problems and how they challenge the brightest brains to join the company.
Post lunch session was handled by Dr. C.V. Yelamaggad from Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Science Bangalore. He spoke on the strategic efforts to develop an altogether different class of functional materials, called Nano-Soft Composites, where the nano-particle (NP) and liquid crystal (LC) themes have been combined by realizing their hybrid (NP-LC) structures through bottom-up organic synthesis. Such NP-LC composites not only are fluids like those of liquids but also exhibit strong optical resonance arising from localized surface plasmon. These unique combined features highly are promising in photonics, sensors, photovoltaics, hyperlensing etc.
This was followed by oral presentations by 10 participants (research scholars) from Bangalore University, Merck Sigma Aldrich, Government Science College, Raman Research Institute and Syngene International Pvt Ltd., Bangalore. The judges for the event were from the sponsor company.
Sowmiya Carmel from Bangalore University bagged the best presenter’s award, followed by Dr Yuvraj from RRI and Mr. Litwin Jacob also from RRI.
In the valedictory session chaired by Dr. Pintoo Ganguly and Dr. Jerome Xavier, students from different institutions and companies shared their experiences during the workshop. Certificate of participation was distributed to all the participants. The vote of thanks was rendered by Dr. Mahuya De Ghosh, HOD, Department of Chemistry. The Lecture workshop ended with everyone having food for thought in a spectrum of topics in Chemistry. It was truly a CHEMPOSIUM.
